EMBROIDERY OF AVANT-GARDE
The Museum highlights prominent, however little known, page of Ukrainian art history. Our cultural heritage deserves close attention of world artistic communities. “Avant-Garde Embroidery” is a unique phenomenon of cooperation between Avant-Garde professional artists and folk masters of traditional Ukrainian embroidery, who created their masterpieces at the beginning of 20th century. This exceptional large scale art experiment has been fulfilled in workshops of villages Verbivka and Skoptsy (now Kyiv Oblast of Ukraine). Its contribution has been highly appraised by professional circles of Europe.
Avant-Garde Embroidery interlaces modern and ancient, modernistic and archaic. That’s why this embroidery has become exceptionally fashionable and stylish in our times. Now, the same as it was 100 years ago, the spectrum of use for these images in art and design is immense, including interior of premises, fashion industry, accessories. And educational perspective of the phenomenon is powerful and promising.
Nowadays, few remember that sketches for embroideries produced in the village workshops had been created by world renowned artists of Suprematism, such as Kazimir Malevich, Alexandra Exter, Nina Genke-Meller, and others. On the other hand, folk masters, such as Vasyl Dovhoshiya, Yevmen Pshechenko, Hanna Sobachko-Shostak, in this workshops have been involved into creative search for new types and designs of art embroidery.
DNA OF UKRAINIAN AVANT-GARDE EMBROIDERY
Museum’s exhibition UA-HERITAGE: DNA OF URAINIAN AVANT-GARDE EMBROIDERY contains 30 pieces. They all had been lost in stormy times of XX centuries and recreated by contemporary embroidery artists after authentic sketches of those days. It’s the first time that one online resource collected recreated masterpieces, original sketches, and scientific information about the phenomenon of Ukrainian Avant-Garde Embroidery.
IMPRESSIVE HISTORY OF UKRAINIAN VILLAGES

History of Ukrainian Modernism Embroidery is impressive. Now it’s hard to imagine that 100 years ago villages Verbivka and Skoptsy (now, Kyiv region of Ukraine) have been acknowledged outstanding hotbed of Avant-Garde art. It’s where the experimental embroidery workshops were created for search of new forms of embroidery.
Best representatives of Avant-Guarde art cooperated with folk embroidery masters and folk painting artists. Among them are Kazimir Malevich, Alexandra Exter, and others well known suprematists, who produced sketches specifically for the embroideries made in the workshops. This way they have implemented their progressive creative ideas in the new forms of art.
